At Schotthofer’s Sunny Creek Farm LLC we ONLY breed JERSEY CATTLE – NO Beef Breeds are raised on our farm. Our herd has now been “CLOSED” for over 8 years – this is your assurance of Healthy, Quality livestock. “OPEN” herds cannot offer the same health standard, as their standard is only as high or low as the last animal brought onto their farm. Many animals “look” healthy one day and are sick the next, all due to prior exposure to disease and pathogens from the exposure to infected animals in days/weeks/months prior. Some Pathogen/Disease exposures can incubate for months or several years, before the disease presents and the animal becomes symptomatic.
This reason alone solidifies the “Value” in purchasing stock from only herds that have been “CLOSED” for more than 5 years. There are NO vaccines for some of the most serious Dairy Cattle Diseases and Many Vaccines are only partially effective. Do not count on Vaccines to guarantee a standard of health --- they are most effective BEFORE an animal is exposed to a disease or pathogen. Numerous serious diseases are “Blood Borne” while other diseases/pathogens become “Soil Borne” which requires a Producer to implement, practice and maintain specific BioSecurity measures to safeguard against many of the Dairy Cattle Diseases. “CLOSED” Herds greatly narrows the degree and or scope of disease exposure to a Breeding herd.
Pictured Below are some of our Brood Cows, Cows that are For Sale and Heifers and Heifer calves. The purpose of these pictures is to represent the quality aspect of our Breeding Stock and the Stock that we are offering For Sale. Some of our Cows are now between 9 and 10 years of age and are breeding, calving and milking well – we picture some of our Matriarch Cows to illustrate that proper Nutrition and Proper care can result in cattle with very good longevity. Quite often a cow will exhibit its best productivity around or beyond 6 years of age. Let us know which cows (pictures) meet with your visual expectations and we will let you know if that animal is available for purchase or if she has offspring available for purchase.
